well, that’s it for back week. I’ve had this tumble page for a long time and I was using it for a place to store inspiration for a project I was working on, that’s what all the guns, explosions and decaying buildings were about. That project is now indefinitely shelved and Back week was just a placeholder.
I guess I can talk about the project since there’s no need to keeps secrets. I was working on a sci-fi thing called Steel Helmet. I still want to do it eventually but the plot involved a post apocalypse kinda thing and I’ve noticed lately that there is FAR too much of that stuff being shit out into the world. It’s always been a popular subgenre but man, it’s really getting out of hand. It seems like every piece of entertainment right now is about the end times.
I think my take on it would have been at least a little different from what everyone expects from that kind of story but this isn’t the time for that story. at least this gives me some time to work out all the bugs in the plot.
That’s another bit, the plot. I was having a terrible time moving the plot along with the character I’d envisioned. The title character was a stoic and unmoved by most external pressures or internal motivations. Every turn the story took was blocked by this fucker who just wasn’t helping me move things along. It’s an interesting challenge to have a character that is fighting you for control of the story. Deep down I think I was resisting the cliches of the genre so I hesitate to just change the character. There were a handful of other bits I liked too. it got pretty bleak and uncomfortable there in the outline and I look forward to using some of the characters and plot points in something eventually.
I was pretty happy with the world that was unfolding in my head. I got excited about the idea of that world and there was a lot in there to play with but as the story grew in my mind it became harder and harder to get those beginning parts to work. I wanted the set up to reflect the payoff better is what I’m saying. I wanted to find a way to draw a reader in in the same way I was as I noodled the thing out. Eventually all these factors and the overwhelming number of movies and TV that are dipping into the same well I was put me off the story for a while. Lots of work still to do on Steel Helmet but that is for another time.
